Juicing: Part 3 ~ RDA vs ODA

Most of us realize that vitamins and minerals are essential for good health, but do you know how much your body needs?

In the medical and nutritional industry, there are many opinions about the guidelines we should follow. If you notice on any vitamin bottle, there is the Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA). I often wondered about that because to me, it seems it is a 'one size fits all' recommendation. How could those recommended amounts benefit all the people of various ages and weights who take the vitamin? Maybe at best, those recommendations are the minimum amounts needed.

Many nutritionists and health professionals have come up with the Optimum Daily Allowance (ODA) guideline. This guideline is to ensure optimum nutrition, not minimum. The optimum daily allowance (ODA), is often 5 to 100 times higher than government RDA guidelines

The ODA is a more personalized guideline, taking into consideration the person's sex, age, weight, family history, emotional, physical and environmental stress. They say fresh squeezed juice can play a major role in satisfying your ODA. While most people eat processed foods and synthetic vitamins and minerals, juice provides optimum nutrition.

The RDA for Vitamin C is only 60 milligrams. But recent studies show the ODA (optimum daily allowance) of C is at least 500 milligrams. RDA for Vitamin E is 30 International Units (IU), while the ODA for Vitamin E is between 200 and 400 IU's.

So what do you think? Are you getting the proper amount of vitiamins and nutrients? We certainly are not getting the proper amount with the processed food we eat and it certainly isn't going to help protect us from disease or keep us in optimum health.

If you want optimum health or have a condition that would benefit from support through good nutrition, the RDA is not enough. If you rely solely on those one a day vitamins and think you are protecting yourself...think again.

Here is a dosage chart from DrLam.com that should give you some idea of RDA vs. ODA

Invest in your health. Consider juicing to help keep yourself in the best optimum health.

Wow I had no idea there was such a difference. I am going to print off that dosage chart. I've just started juicing myself in the last while and I love the taste of fresh made juice. Delicious!

Thanks for a wonderful blog. I have bookmarked you and I will be back.
Many Blessings,

Hi Shelley,
Thanks for your kind words and I appreciate your visit. Isn't fresh juice great? and the health benefits are many.
I wasn't aware of the difference between RDA and ODA myself until I started researching. Unfortunately it took an illness for me to become more aware...
