Eating For Your Health: Glowing Skin & Silky Hair

To help keep your skin glowing, include antioxidants like lycopene and vitamin C, as well as soy protein and Omega-3 fatty acids.

Antioxidants have been known to help in topical skin care, but those nutrients work even better from the inside out. Our skin is the largest body organ and when it is exposed to the sun's rays, free radicals can develop. Those free radicals attack the skin and impair the blood flow, which causes premature aging. Antioxidants help to fight that process.

Vitamin C is found in citrus fruits. This vitamin promotes collagen production, which provides us with vibrant skin. Lycopene is found in foods like canned tomatoes and red grapefruit juice, which also promotes healthy skin.

Tofu is a great choice since its omega 3 fatty acids help regenerate new skin cells and reduce inflammation, while the soy protein it contains has been known to boost collagen.

For silky, shiny healthy hair, eat foods high in calcium and quality protein like eggs, dairy and fish. Eggs also provide biotin, a component of both bone and hair. Vitamins B6, B12 and folate will help nourish your hair follicle cells too.

Feng Shui: Using Fish and Water

One of my readers left a comment asking if I knew the importance of using a Fish tank when applying Feng Shui. Honestly, I did not know the true answer, but I did some research and this is what I have learned:

Many people have confused fish as being a Feng Shui remedy. What this is, is a combination of superstition and misunderstanding. Feng Shui uses the number, 6 and 7, which are representative of metal (6=Qian or hard metal, and 7= Dui or soft metal).

The Five Element theory suggests metal strengthens water. Chinese folklore says that adding 6 gold fish and one black fish makes the water stronger. What you would be trying to do is to strengthen the water effect with metal. Actually, the fish only add decoration to the tank. To really strengthen the water element, the tank should have the real metal element with the water.

In feng shui, moving water brings prosperity and good luck to the home. Using Water fountains and aquariums are great feng shui enhancements and you also get the soothing and energizing elements.

The sound and motion of gurgling water activates chi and also helps balance chi. Moving water makes things active when the chi has been stagnant. Use moving water cures anywhere you want to enhance with which the water flows.

If you place a water fountain by your front door (indoors or out) to activate career, make sure the water flows toward your door, not away from it. You want all that good chi to come into your life, not flow out of it.

An aquarium can be extremely effective with increasing wealth and luck. The best places for an aquarium are in career and wealth areas or near the front door. Combine eight orange fish and one black one, or eight black and one gold. If you’re using an aquarium to increase wealth, add nine coins to the tank (chose a metal that won’t harm your fish).

INTENTION—As you set up your fountain or aquarium, stay focused on your intention to activate your success, prosperity, or career advancement, or whatever your specific goal may be.

AFFIRMATION—When you are done, make a statement to support your intention, such as: “Water now flows and nourishes this space, bringing abundance and prosperity to me and my family.”

The best fish tank from a Feng Shui standpoint is a circular one, but if you cannot find this shape, a rectangular one works too.

Part 3~ Get More Help From Others With Feng Shui

The helpful people and travel section of Feng Shui is located in the front right-hand side of your home as you enter the front door.

This area of your house can hold all kinds of energy for you. If you travel too much or do not do as much traveling as you would like to, you can balance that out. If you find you do everything yourself or for yourself with no help from anyone, you can shift the energies to be more helpful in life. Even if you feel out of sync with what’s going on around you, this spot in your house can get you feeling balanced.

Or, if you are in some sort of legal battle, home purchase or sale, need medical attention, or any other major event where you really need to be treated fairly and justly, this part of the house can get things in control for you.

Things to ADD:

Silver and Gray: These two colors are very helpful in this spot. Even if you have to use a piece of aluminum foil, you should put it here. You could place a silver box in the helpful people and travel area to hold a space for your needed energies. One idea might be to write down anything you need help with, but do not use the words need or want in these sentences -- Try "thank you” for ...." and put the paper in the box.. If you are in a legal situation, put your opponents' names (business cards), as well as any legal documents in the box. If the box is not big enough, then wrap it up in aluminum foil. And make your intention to bring about a fair outcome.

Feng Shui can work for you if you give it the right intention and respect.

Part 2 - Feng Shui Financial Power Spots

Did you know there are Financial power spots within any space?

Prosperity issues are associated with the back left corner of any space. If you stand at your front door and face into the house ~ your wealth area is at the back of the house on the left-hand side.

To find the wealth area of any room:: facing in from the doorway, it's the corner area in the back of the room on the left-hand side.

Will you find and locate the wealth areas at your office, living room, kitchen, and/or bedroom? Now that you can find your money power spots, here are some tips to apply feng shui to those areas:

Clean out any clutter. Getting rid of clutter is one of the most powerful ways to shift energy and allow the energy to move freely.

Fix anything that is broken. If it does not work and if you can’t fix it, remove it so the money spots will work properly.

Use symbols of prosperity. A bowl of coins that you add your spare change into it every day, a "lucky bamboo" plant, or anything that symbolizes success and prosperity to you.

Use colors green and purple. Green symbolizes vitality and growth and purple is the color of wealth.

If you neglect your money, it will neglect you, so balance your checkbook monthly and pay your bills on time.

Clean the clutter out of your purse and wallet. If your money is not organized and is just crunched any old way, it will be as though you don’t value money.

Take a few moments every day to think about all the good things that happened to you and express gratitude for what you have received.

The Feng Shui wealth area is considered "fortunate blessings”. The more you notice, appreciate, and express gratitude for blessings received, no matter how small, the more good things will come your way, including money.

What is Feng Shui? Part 1

You have probably heard of Feng Shui, but do you really know what it is?

Feng Shui is an ancient art and science developed in China more than 3,000 years ago. Feng Shui teaches us how to attract and enhance our life energy. You can accomplish this by balancing the energies of any space to bring you good health and good fortune.

Feng means wind and shui means water. Within the Chinese culture, wind and water have always been associated with good harvest and good health.

So, good feng shui means good fortune and bad fend shui means hardship or misfortune.

The easiest way to bring good feng shui into your life is by using the 5 principals or 5 elements: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water. Each element corresponds with a color:

WOOD: Green, Brown
FIRE: Red, Strong Yellow, Orange, Purple
EARTH: Light Yellow. Sandy/Earthy, Light Brown
METAL: White, Gray
WATER: Blue, Black

Feng Shui Tips: Using The 5 Elements

Use the Color Green to bring healing and improved health to yourself and those living with you. If you use the color green in the East fen shui of your home, this can help balance family life

Use the Color Blue in the North area of you home. This will help and support you in your career.

Use the Color Yellow in the South area of your home. This will bring happy gatherings and good times.

Use the Color of Pure White in the West area of your home to support you in your creative endeavors.

Being Thankful on Thanksgiving

Today as we celebrate Thanksgiving with our families and friends, will you truly take time out to reflect on what you are thankful for?

I have been doing that quite often this year. Pretty much on a daily basis...being thankful. For my health, for my life, for all I have, my family and friends, the opportunities that come my way and the love that surrounds me.

Abundance can be brought into your life if you declare to the universe that you are thankful. This can easily be done on a daily basis. I find that I'm in a better mood when I take time to appreciate something that makes me happy and be thankful for it. My heart seems to fill with happiness...

What are you thankful for?

I think many, many people take for granted what they have in their life. Maybe focusing only on the negatives...the problems, the stresses, the little things that may annoy or aggravate you. We might forget what we have and appreciate them.

Count your blessings. Take a moment each day and be thankful for something in your life. As you're driving in your car or sitting quietly by yourself, even while watching TV... just take a minute and be thankful.

As you see something that excites you or makes you feel good, as you smell food cooking, drive to work, come home to family, enjoying the company of friends or even your pet, your many possessions, your health and so on...be thankful!

Some people are not blessed as you and I are. Many have worse problems or live in worse conditions and/or simply do not have all that we have.

Take a break during your day...starting today...and be thankful and count your blessings...ask the universe for more of what makes you happy. Be positive and say...I like this...bring more more!

May you all enjoy your Thanksgiving. Many blessings to you all

Thank you, Lord, for life.

Even though I clutch my blanket and growl when the alarm rings. Thank you, Lord, that I can hear.. There are many who are deaf.

Even though I keep my eyes closed against the morning light as long as possible. Thank you, Lord , that I can see. Many are blind.

Even though I huddle in my bed and put off rising.. Thank you, Lord, that I have the strength to rise. There are many who are bedridden.

Even though the first hour of my day is hectic, when socks are lost, toast is burned, tempers are short, and my children are so loud.

Thank you, Lord, for my family. There are many who are lonely.

Even though our breakfast table never looks like the picture in magazines and the menu is at times unbalanced.

Thank you, Lord, for the food we have. There are many who are hungry.

Even though the routine of my job often is monotonous. Thank you, Lord, for the opportunity to work. There are many who have no job.

Even though I grumble and bemoan my fate from day to day and wish my circumstances were not so modest.

Thank you, Lord, for life.

Eyeglasses For Less

In these times we are facing with the economy such as it is, we are all looking to get the best value for our money.

Have you ever shopped for eyeglasses? They are quite expensive to begin with and when you start adding optional items such as, anti-reflecting coating or UV protection, the glasses cost even more.

There is now a website offering complete prescription eyeglass at a fraction of the cost. Starting at just $15, you also receive additional items for free. Anti-reflective coating, UV protection, anti-scratch coating etc...You can't always get that from your eye doctor or store.

What I loved about this site is that you can virtually 'try-on' a pair of glasses, so you will know what they would look like on yourself. What a great idea! All you have to do is upload a photo of yourself and then follow the instructions and you will see yourself with the frames you have chosen.

Now you can afford a new pair of eyeglasses. Whether you are wearing old glasses with an outdated prescription, need a second back up pair or just want a different look, you can go to www.optical4less.com and get any style you want.

Don't wear eyeglasses? Optical4Less also offers great prices on contact lenses. As a wearer of both eye glasses and contacts, I can save a bundle at this site and be confidant I am getting the best value from eye care experts.

Do You Know If You Have Sleep Apnea?

Do you know someone who snores? My ex-husband snored so loudly that I needed to fall asleep first if I ever wanted to get some sleep.

We thought he just snored and dealt with it the best we could. Later he learned that he had sleep apnea. Many people have sleep apnea and aren't even aware that they do.

Sleep apnea is a disorder that interrupts your breathing during sleep. People with apnea can have pauses in their breathing a hundred times during the night.

The symptoms of sleep apnea can include loud snoring, excessive sleepiness during the day and experience gasping during sleep.

While those symptoms can seem harmless, sleep apnea can cause serious health problems and may even be life threatening.

The effects of sleep apnea can cause:
* high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease
* memory problems
* weight gain
* impotence
* headaches

There are treatments available for people with sleep apnea. They range from lifestyle changes to surgical procedures.

If you know someone with any symptoms mentioned or if someone suggests you may have signs of sleep apnea, please speak to your physician to determine if indeed you do have sleep apnea and get treatment.

Remember, even children can have sleep apnea. This does not just affect adults.

Need A Little Motivation?

If you are like me, at times it seems hard to stay motivated. I try not to focus on the lack of motivation because I do realize it is common to get in a 'lull' sometimes. When I find myself needing to get back on track, I keep my spirits up during the temporary feeling.

My decision to live a healthier life was one goal I set for myself. Sure, in the beginning the motivation is quite high but then sometimes I find myself being a bit lax.

One thing I wanted to do was start exercising more and that included I walk about five miles each week. I needed to set a smart goal for myself. I wanted to make sure my goal was realistic and attainable for myself. Just thinking about when would I get in a mile each day, had me cringe. It seems life keeps us so busy...BUT, I found if I set a specfic time each day and walked for only 20 minutes...I was walking a mile each day and that equaled my goal of adding 5 miles of walking each week!

If you find yourself feeling less motivated about something, first know that you are not alone. Many of us feel that way sometimes. Realize it is only a temporary feeling.

Set yourself a smart, realistic goal to get yourself back on track.Make sure your goal is something attainable and not too far from your reach. Keep your spirits up and keep positive even when you just don't feel like it.

Positive Habit Example 2 - Having a Healthy, Trim Body and Lower Cholesterol- Conclusion

Your Life is about to Change! Put your Mind,Body and Soul on "Autopilot" for success.
You can change who you are by teaching yourself to add positive habits to your lifestyle. Our character, health and virtually every aspect of our lives are indeed determined by our habits.

Positive Habit Example 2 - Having a Healthy, Trim Body and Lower Cholesterol

What is flax?

Flax is a blue-flowering plant known for its oil-rich seed. People have been eating flaxseed since ancient times, it has a pleasant, nutty flavor. The health benefits of flaxseed and flaxseed oil are significant and for that reason this habit is recommended as a primary habit for health and a trim and fit body. Here are some of the benefits of flaxseed and flaxseed oil:

Flaxseed contains both soluble and insoluble fiber. Several studies have shown that flaxseed can help to lower cholesterol in the same way that other soluble fiber foods like oat bran and fruit pectin do. A study at the University of Toronto showed that total cholesterol levels dropped 9% and LDL (the "bad" cholesterol) decreased 18% among a group of women who ate milled flaxseed cooked into bread every day for a period of 4 weeks.

Flaxseed is one of the richest sources of lignans and alpha-linolenic acid. Studies suggest that lignans may help to prevent certain cancers. Flaxseed is one of the few plants in the plant kingdom that provide a high ratio of alpha-linolenic acid (an omega-3 fatty acid) to linoleic (omega-6 fatty acids), it is an excellent source of healthy polyunsaturated fat.

A new study has confirmed that the positive habit of taking flax seed daily can help you get a trim and fit body. Dr. Sam Bhathena, a researcher at the Phytonutrients Laboratory of the US department of Agriculture, he said, "we have observed that flax seed meal is much more effective in lowering cholesterol then soy. Several other studies have shown that in general, omega-3 fatty acids, lower lipid deposition, and help in reducing body weight."

Omega-3 fatty acids — More than half the fat contained in flaxseed is omega-3 fatty acid type, an essential fatty acid. There have been numerous studies reporting the health benefits of consuming omega-3 fats. Recent studies suggest that omega-3 fatty acids which are abundant in flax seed can help protect you from coronary artery disease, stroke, high blood pressure, autoimmune and inflammatory disorders. Studies on the effects of flax seed on breast cancer are now under way. Omega-3s can also help boost your metabolism, helping your body to burn calories faster.

Flax is available as raw seed, ground seed and also as an oil which is made by cold pressing flax seeds. You can purchase raw flax seed, ground flax seed and flax seed oil at most health food stores. The easiest way to incorporate flax seed into your diet is to buy ground flax seed meal and add it to your food.

· Substitute for cooking oil or shortening in baked goods.
· Add ground flax seed to pancakes, waffles and cereals.
· Put ground flax seed on salads.

Here is a great recipe for a super health shake

Make a protein shake with 8 ounces of your favorite juice such as apple or orange, add 2 tablespoons of flax seed oil, 2 tablespoons of soy powder, 1 tablespoon of lecithin, fresh fruit such as bananas, papayas or blueberries. Blend with a hand blender or an electric blender. This power shake will provide you with the health benefits of soy; omega-3’s, fiber, antioxidants, and enzymes from the fruit, and the fat loss benefits of lecithin.

What is a Positive Habit? ~ Part 2

A positive habit is simply a habit that produces positive benefits, actions and attitudes you want to acquire and make a part of your life. Why is there such great power in positive habits to effect change? Because habits, by their very nature, are automatic. After a period of time they can become permanent.

How To Create Positive Change in Your Own Life

So how do we go about adding new positive habits to our life?

It’s really quite easy. You simply begin repeating an action, attitude or thought process every day for at least 21 days. Research has shown that an action that is repeated for a minimum of 21 days is likely to become a permanent habit. Remember that positive habits have positive benefits and you will reap those benefits for as long as you maintain that habit. So now that we know what positive habits are, and how to acquire them, here are some simple positive habits that will help you reach your goals and have a healthier body.

Positive Habit Example 1 - Make it a habit to set goals

What better habit could you have then the habit of setting goals? Did you know that the most successful people all share the common positive habit of goal setting? A study was done to determine the importance of goal setting. College students who had gone on to achieve great success in business were asked to list their habits. The students who had made a habit of setting goals were in the top 3% of earnings in the population! It is almost impossible to overestimate the value of goal-setting as a positive habit. Goal setting is simple, yet 97% of the population never do it. By making goal setting a positive habit, you can start placing yourself in the top 3% of the population of successful people.

Here are some simple steps to help you start making goal setting a positive habit:

Step 1 - Define your goals, write them down, and be very specific; capture your goals on paper. It is amazing how many people never take the time to write down exactly what it is they want in life. Remember, you can’t hit a target if you don’t have one.

Step 2 - Determine what the time line is for reaching your goals; set specific deadlines for each goal.

Step 3 - Identify any obstacles that may stand in your way, list them, and state how you plan to overcome them.

Step 4 - Make a list of the people and/or organizations who will help you reach your goals.

The Power of Positive Habits ~ Part 1

Put your Mind and Body on "Autopilot" and reach your goals...automatically!

Did you know that habits can be incredibly powerful tools for personal growth and success? You can change who you are by teaching yourself how to add positive habits to your lifestyle. You can improve your mind, body and soul... Improve your Health...Be More Motivated...Be More Productive...Achieve More Success...Have Unlimited and Boundless Energy...Improve your Self-Esteem

Think about the habits you have now and how they affect virtually every aspect of your life. Your weight and health are determined by your eating habits. Your relationships with people are determined by your social habits. Your success at work is determined by your work habits. You have sleeping habits that dictate how well you sleep. You have sexual habits. You even have buying habits; just take a look around your house and you will quickly see them. Our character, health and virtually every aspect of our lives are indeed determined by our habits.

If you ask ten people on the street what the word habit means, nine out of ten will tell you that a habit is a negative action that people do over and over again, like smoking, or procrastinating, or eating too much. Bad habits get all the press. Let’s look at the results of just one bad habit: smoking. Every year, over 400,000 people lose their lives to smoking-related illnesses in the United States. Imagine then, the negative power that exists in just that one bad habit. It is staggering.

Now I want you think about an even greater power, a power that can bring you success, health and happiness; a power for positive, permanent, and automatic personal growth: the power of positive habits. Let’s look a little closer at the meaning of the word habit. Random House dictionary defines habit in this way:

Habit:
An acquired behavior pattern regularly followed until it has become almost involuntary

The important words in this definition are acquired and almost involuntary. Let me ask you a question. When is the last time you sat down and said to yourself, "Today I am going to add a new habit to my life?" I would have to guess that you have probably never said those words.

As you read these posts, you will see how easy it is to add positive habits to your life and the great power they have to change it. Think about the words almost involuntary. This means the habit is so powerful in your mind that it is almost unstoppable! With respect to bad habits like smoking, procrastination, and overeating, this is very bad. But with positive habits, this is very, very good.

The Best & Worst Chinese Food

Can Chinese Food be healthy?

I realize the food here is not like the food in China, where they focus on vegetables, tofu and rice, but you can make healthy choices if you enjoy eating Chinese food.

Here in the US, Chinese food is drenched in oil or deep fried and you find more beef and pork dishes being offered, rather than soy or fish.

Worst Choices:
> Crispy: If your choice includes anything 'crispy', it means it is deep fried and has more calories. Try instead stir fried or steamed

> Egg rolls: These are deep fried and fat saturated. If you love eating egg rolls like I do, try wrapping a napkin around them and let the oil/fat be absorbed.

> Spare Ribs: These are usually fatty pork ribs covered in sauce

> Sweet & Sour: No matter what meat you order this with, it is deep fried

> Fried Rice: This is really just fried white rice with added bits of pork and sodium. No real nutrients with a high glycemic index, it adds nothing but calories

Best Choices
> Soup: Researchers are raving about the soup strategy to control your weight. Eating a cup of soup before your meal, takes the edge off your appetite

> Chinese Vegetables: Bean sprouts, bok choy, broccoli, cabbage, long beans, eggplant etc are great sources of fiber, vitamins and minerals

> Dim Sun: This is available with different fillings, but a healthier choice than fried

> Anything Steamed: This is a more healthy way of preparing foods

> Stir-Fry: Combined with veggies, shrimp, tofu, chicken this is more healthy for you. Remember to ask for 'light on the oil' or request your meal be stir fried in broth instead.

Halloween Candy Recall

With Halloween just a couple days away, here is a recall you should be aware of.

Sherwood brand Pirate's Gold Milk Chocolate coins are being recalled due to the fact that they contain Melamine, the ingredient in milk product that has caused many infant deaths in china. These candies are sold at Costco, as well as many bulk and dollar stores. Please make sure to spread the word and DO NOT EAT THE PIRATE COINS (you know the ones wrapped in the shiny gold foil) and please let other parents know about this!

This recall is mainly affecting Canada, but they are not sure if this candy crossed the border into the US.

Non Invasive Approach to Ear Pain

Do you suffer from ear infections?
I am prone to sinus infections which in turn causes ear pain. Fluid collects in my middle ear. The doctor treats this infection usually with antibiotics, but my body seems to resist because of the repeated use of anitibiotics..

Children are more prone to get ear infections. It is one of the most common infections frequently in the first 2 to 4 years of their life.

What Is An Ear Infection?

The middle ear is a pocket behind the eardrum. When infection is present in the middle ear it is called otitis media. Germs and bacteria can get into the middle ear which then causes pain. Between the middle ear and your throat there are tubes called eustachian. This tube (one on each side) keeps pressure from building up by letting air move in and out. If the eustachian tubes get blocked when you have a cold or allergies, then germs seep inside causing an ear infection.

Ear infections can be caused by bacteria or considered viral. Bacteria infections are usually treated with antibiotics. If you get repeated viral infections, the need for surgery may be necessary. This surgery which can be permanent or not, consists of having a small plastic tube inserted into the eardrum. This tube is a vent to relieve the pressure of the buildup of fluid or infection. It also acts as a drain for the fluid.

Common Signs of Otitis media in children:

> unusual irritability
> difficulty sleeping
> tugging or pulling at one or both ears
> fever
> fluid draining from the ear
> loss of balance
> unresponsiveness to quiet sounds or other signs of hearing difficulty such as sitting too close to the television or being inattentive

Some ear infections can clear up on their own, but some require treatment. Treatments for ear infections can include: antibiotics, ear drops, over the counter pain relievers and drainage tubes.

Another approach to treating ear pain that is gaining popularity in the news is Eardoc

The EARDOC is an efficient non-invasive device that reduces the ear pain by treating the problem rather than the symptom.Eardoc opens the Eusthichian tube for otitis media, ear infection, swimmers ear and other ear pain causes.

Learn more about this alternative treatment option.

The EARDOC is the only efficient non invasive device that reduces the pain and edema for ear pain.

What Happens When We Die?

Dr. Sam Parnia, critical care doctor, director of the Human Consciousness Project and author of “What Happens When We Die,” seeks to settle this debate through AWARE(Awareness during Resuscitation), a division of the Human Consciousness Project.

Find out what Parnia had to say when AOL Health sat down with him for an interview. Click here to read full article

What is the AWARE study?

During the AWARE study, physicians will use the latest technologies to study the brain and consciousness during cardiac arrest. At the same time, they will also be testing the validity of out of body experiences and claims of being able to see and hear during cardiac arrest through the use of randomly generated hidden images that are not visible unless viewed from specific vantage points above.

Cataract Free America

I love bringing awareness to others about topics they could benefit from. This is one topic that hits home.

Cataracts.

My grandmother had cataracts and I remember when I was a child, she was almost blind. Luckily our family was able to help with the cost of corrective surgery. Others are not so lucky. My mom had to have a cataract removed also and her quality of life improved. She was lucky enough to have great medical insurance to help cover her medical bills. Others are not so lucky.

I believe more help should be available for our seniors. I heard about this program and couldn't wait to post about this. Cataract Free America is a new, non profit organization whose mission is to help seniors who are eligible to getfree cataract surgery. Isn't that wonderful? If Cataracts have touched you or a family member, please look into this. Your eyesight is a wonderful gift. This organization also provides information to the public about cataract related issues and gives researched answers to seniors' questions.

What are Cataracts?

A cataract can affect one eye or both. When the crystalline lens within your eye becomes cloudy, it is considered a cataract. The crystalline lens is the clear part of the eye and it helps to focus light, or an image, onto the retina. A healthy eye receives the light through the transparent lens and passes it to the retina. Once at the retina, the light is then changed into nerve signals that are sent to the brain. If your lens is clear and the retina will receive a sharp image. If the lens is cloudy from a cataract, the image will be blurred, distorted, and/or discolored.

Cataracts affect millions of people each year and is the leading cause of correctable blindness in the world.

Cataract Symptoms

> No symptoms
> Poor night vision, halos, starbursts
> Hazy, cloudy, or blurry vision
> Glare
> Ghost images, double vision or multiple images in one eye
> Better near vision, worse distance vision
> Frequent eyeglasses or contact lens prescription changes
> Color changes toward yellow and brown

If you experience any of these listed symptoms, it could be a sign of other eye problems also. Please consult your eye specialist.

At Cataract Free America, they have a panel of doctors who are willing to reduce fees for eligible seniors. They will also accept existing insurance, such as Medicare as PAYMENT IN FULL. They will also provide surgery for FREE to those who have no insurance.

Informational links for you:

Your Favorite Healthy Recipe Could Win!

I have mentioned in this blog many times about how healthy foods and juices affect our bodies in a positive way. If you are like me, I do a lot of grilling, so I have a lot of healthy recipes just for the grill.

I have come across this contest and wanted to pass the information along.

There is a contest going on over at iBuyBarbeques.com that gives you a chance to win $400 for your favorite recipe. Even better if you use your barbeque grills for preparation. Please get complete rules by going to iBuyBarbeques.com.

In order to qualify for the $400 grand prize, you must submit your entry URL to dan@ibuystores.com. Post your favorite recipe in your blog or website and then submit your url. How easy it that?

Here's one recipe I am considering to enter myself. It's super easy and so unbelievably amazing!

Lemon Sauteed Shrimp over Caramelized Fennel

1 lb. uncooked large shrimp, peel and deveined
2 tbsp lemon juice
1 large clove garlic, chopped
1 cup chopped fresh Italian parsley
1/2 tsp grated lemon peel
1/2 tsp salt
3 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
1 medium fennel bulb, thinly sliced
1 large onion, thinly sliced

In large non aluminum bowl or re-seal able plastic bag, combine shrimp, lemon juice, garlic, lemon peel, parsley and salt. Marinate in refrigerator 15 minutes or longer.

Meanwhile, in 12 inch nonstick skillet, heat 2 tablespoons olive oil over medium heat and cook fennel and onion, stirring occasionally, 15 minutes or until vegetables are golden. Remove vegetables into a serving platter and keep warm.

Remove shrimp from marinade (discard the marinade). I put the shrimp on skewers or use my grilling frying pan and grill until shrimp are a nice shade of pink. I then remove the shrimp into the serving platter, spooning the warm fennel and onion over the shrimp. Season with fresh ground pepper if desired. Absolutely yummy!

Serves: 4
Prep time: 15 minutes
Marinade time: 15 minutes
Cook time: 20 minutes

Something that taste this fantastic takes so little time and is healthy for you. Enjoy!

Please post a comment and let me know if you enter this contest or if you want to share some healthy grill recipes with us.
Good luck!

Less Invasive Surgery For Weight Loss

Most surgery is usually considered invasive. Of course there are risks involved surrounding any type of surgery, but with the current houston weight loss surgery it is less invasive. Less invasive means there is less trauma to your body, giving your body a chance to recover more quickly.

If your quality of life depends on losing weight, you may want to consider the lap band procedure. You may have seen commercials for this procedure on television. If you thought about having gastric bypass, think about this: the lap band procedure is the least invasive surgery you can have, it is 10 times safer than gastric bypass, there is no stomach stapling or intestinal changes, the lap band procedure has the lowest operative complication rate and the lowest nutritional risk.

You can click HERE to find out if there is a free seminar to learn more about the Lap Band procedure in your area.

Remember: you do have options and it is best to learn as much as you possibly can regarding any procedure you are thinking of having.

Something For God To Do

To: YOU
Date: TODAY
From: GOD
Subject: YOURSELF
Reference: LIFE

This is God. Today I will be handling All of your problems for you. I do Not need your help. So, have a nice day.
I love you.

P.S. And, remember...
If life happens to deliver a situation to you that you cannot handle, do Not attempt to resolve it yourself! Kindly put it in the SFGTD (something for God to do) box. I will get to it in MY TIME. All situations will be resolved, but in My time, not yours.

Once the matter is placed into the box, do not hold onto it by worrying about it. Instead, focus on all the wonderful things that are present in your life now.

If you find yourself stuck in traffic, don't despair. There are people in this world for whom driving is an unheard of privilege.

Should you have a bad day at work; think of the man who has been out of work for years.

Should you despair over a relationship gone bad; think of the person who has never known what it's like to love and be loved in return.

Should you grieve the passing of another weekend; think of the woman in dire straits, working twelve hours a day, seven days a week to feed her children.

Should your car break down, leaving you miles away from assistance; think of the paraplegic who would love the opportunity to take that walk.

Should you notice a new gray hair in the mirror; think of the cancer patient in chemo who wishes she had hair to examine.

Should you find yourself at a loss and pondering what is life all about, asking what is my purpose? Be thankful. There are those who didn't live long enough to get the opportunity.

Should you find yourself the victim of other people's bitterness, ignorance, smallness or insecurities; remember, things could be worse. You could be one of them!

Now, you have a nice day...God

Examining Your Skin For Melanoma

The best time to examine your skin is after a bath or shower. Use a full length mirror is you have one. If not, a hand held one will work fine. Check any moles, blemishes or birthmarks from the top of your head to your toes. Note anything new or a change. Be aware of any sore that doesn't heal.

Face the mirror: check your face, ears, neck, chest and belly. Use a comb or hairdryer to part your hair so you can check your scalp.

Check the underarm areas, both sides of your arms, the tops and palms of your hands, in between your fingers and your nails.

Sit down and check the front of your thighs, shins, the tops of your feet, in between your toes and your toenails. Look at the bottom of your feet, your calves. Using your mirror, check the back of your thighs, buttocks, genital area, lower and upper back and the back of your neck.

If you do this exam regularly, you will know what is normal to you. Remember the warning signs written in this series of posts. If you suspect any changes or find a new growth, check with your doctor or dermatologist.

Can You Prevent Melanoma?

There are some ways you can reduce your risk of melanoma. You can avoid exposure to intense sunlight. This is especially true for fair skinned people and those with a tendency to develop moles or those who are at increased risk for any reason. Avoid unprotected sun exposure when the sun is high in the sky. Wear protective clothing, sunglasses and hat. Use a suncreen with a sun protector of 15 or higher. Sunscreen doesn't offer total protection from UV rays, but it does help. Indoor sun lamps and tanning beds also increase your risk of skin cancer.

Check your skin thoroughly once a month. Get familiar with your skin and the patterns of any moles, freckles and birthmarks. Be alert to any changes in the number, size, color, shape of any spots on your skin. The best way to do this is to examine your skin. Call your doctor is you find any new or changing skin growths.

Other Warning Signs of Melanoma

Other warning signs include:

> A sore that does not heal

> The spread of pigment from the border into the surrounding skin

> A change in sensation-itchiness, tenderness or pain

> A change in the surface of the mole - oozing, bleeding or the appearance of a bump

> A mole that stands out or looks different from your other moles

How Is Melanoma Diagnosed?

If your doctor suspects a change in your skin is a sign of melanoma, a sample of the area is removed. This is called a biopsy and can usually be done quickly and usually in the doctor's office. The sample is then sent to a pathology lab for examination under a microscope to confirm a diagnosis

The Differences Between Melanoma and a Mole

An ordinary mole is an evenly covered brown, tan or flesh colored spot in the skin. It can be either raised or flat. It's shape can be round or oval, but has defined borders. Moles are usually a quarter of an inch across. You can be born with moles or they can appear later in life. Sometimes several moles appear at about the same time, especially areas of the skin that has been exposed to the sun. Once a mole has fully developed, it normally remains the same size, shape and color for many years. Some moles fade as a person grows older.

Warning Signs

The most important warning sign is a new or changing skin growth. It could be a new growth or change in size, shape or color that progresses over a month or more.

Most of us do have spots on our skin. A non cancerous growth sometimes can even look like skin cancer. Almost everyone has moles and most are harmless, but a change in their appearance is a sign you should see your doctor.

Things To Look For:

ASYMMETRY: One half of the spot does not match the other half

BORDER IRREGULARITY: Normal moles are round or oval. The borders of a melanoma may be uneven or notched.

COLOR: Common moles are usually one color throughout. Melanomas may have several colors or an irregular pattern.

DIAMETER: Common moles are usually less than one quarter of an inch across (about the diameter of a pencil eraser). Melanomas may be one eighth to one quarter of an inch across but are often larger.

Who is Likely To Get Melanoma?

No one is free from risk of getting melanoma. People who have the highest risk have many moles, irregular moles or large moles.

Those with close blood relatives who have had melanoma or who have previously had melanoma themselves are at risk. This can be caused by a family lifestyle of frequent sun exposure, having fair skin, inheriting a gene mutation or a combination of these factors.

Some dermatologists recommend those with a history of melanoma in a first relative-(being a mother, father, sister son, etc.) have a skin exam to determine their risk.

Other people that develop melanoma might have fair skin which burns and freckles easily. People with red or blond hair. Even though melanoma is less common among people with darker skin who hardly sunburn, no one is immune to melanoma.

The risk is also higher in places where there is intense, year round sunshine. As with other types of cancer, the chance of developing melanoma increases as a person gets older.

It was once believed that dark brown or black skin prevented melanoma. When melanoma develops in people whose untanned skin is brown, it commonly occurs on the palms, feet and under their nails.

What Causes Melanoma? Part 2

Ultraviolet radiation can damage our DNA. This is the genetic material in our cells. Sometimes the damage can affect certain genes that control how and when our cells grow and divide. If the genes don't work properly, the affected cells can form a melanoma.

Most ultraviolet radiation comes from sunlight, but sometimes it will come from artificial sources, such as tanning beds. Some of this exposure may have occurred a few years before the beginning of cancer.

Children and adults who have received a lot of intense sun exposure may not see a result of cancer for many years.

Some families have inherited melanomas, gene changes that increase the risk of melanoma being passed from one generation to the next.

Most moles never turn into a melanoma, but some can. It is not yet known why some moles may become malignant or why having many moles increases a person's risk of getting melanoma.

Melanoma: What You Should Know

I will be presenting a series of posts dedicated to Melanoma. Did you know that one million people are diagnosed with skin cancer each year? Melanoma will be found in about 60,000 of that number and it is the most serious of the common types of skin cancer.

If Melanoma is detected early, it can be treated successfully. There are three forms of skin cancer. Basal cell, squamous cell carcinomas and Melanoma.

Diagnosing Melanoma early can be cured and it's very important to notices any changes in your skin. I hope this series of posts will bring about awareness and knowledge that is so important in saving your life.

Now that summer is officially over, it is a good time to learn about Melanoma. The hot weather and abundant sunshine keeps most of us outdoors. Laying on beaches, playing sports, family gatherings etc...While out in the sun our skin tans. Some people tan in tanning booths. You will learn in a later post, how receiving a lot of sun exposure can put you at risk for developing Melanoma.

What is Melanoma?

Melanoma is a cancer that begins in melanocytes, the cells that produce the skin coloring or protective pigment called melanin.

Melanin helps protect the deeper layers of the skin from the harmful effects of the sun. When you are exposed to sunlight, the melanin in your skin increases and your skin darkens.

Melanoma can spread if not diagnosed and treated at an early stage. Once melanoma cells reach vital organs and it grows, they are more difficult to treat and much less likely to be cured.

Melanoma can appear on the skin without warning. It can also begin in or near a mole or other dark spot on the skin. It's very important to know the color, size and location of the moles on your body or other dark spots. It will be easier to determine any changes that may occur.

An Interesting Story ~ Who Took Our Place

One day, a man went to visit a church.
He got there early, parked his car and got out.
Another car pulled up near the driver, got out and said, 'I always park there! You took my place!

The visitor went inside for Sunday School, found an empty seat and sat down.
A young lady from the church approached him and stated, 'That's my seat! You took my place!'The visitor was somewhat distressed by this rude welcome, but said nothing.

After Sunday School, the visitor went into the sanctuary and sat down. Another member walked up to him and said, 'That's where I always sit! You took my place!'

The visitor was even more troubled by this treatment, but still He said nothing.
Later as the congregation was praying for Christ to dwell among them, the visitor stood up, and his appearance began to change.

Horrible scars became visible on his hands and on his sandaled feet. Someone from the congregation noticed him and called out, 'What happened to you, and who are you?' The visitor replied, as his hat became a crown of thorns, and a tear fell from his eye,
'I am the One who took your place.'

Maybe, just maybe, we can get the world to start thinking of who took our place.

Men...Do You Practice Preventative Care?

Okay, for the men out there reading this…will you admit that you only go to the doctor when you are really really sick? Most of the men I know, will not go to the doctors when they are sick or even when they are having symptoms of an unknown problem.

I hear women complain all the time that the men in their lives just won't go see a doctor if they feel ill or have a symptom of some kind. Is it because they just don't want to know if something is wrong? or does it make them feel weak to say...I need to go see a doctor?

Have you ever suggested to the man in your life to take action and practice preventative care? The response I have received was, ...what are you kidding? I don't need to do that. I got the eye roll and the shoulder shrug.

Well, men...I hate to break the news to you... you are not indestructable. Women practice preventative care and it does help with any future problems. It is better to find out and take care of any health issues as soon as possible.

According to Men’s Health Network, the below schedule is what they recommend men follow:

Testicular self-exam ~ Monthly

Blood Pressure ~ Annually

Rectal Exam ~ Annually

Juicing: Part 4 ~ The Cleansing Power of Fresh Juice & When To Drink Fresh Juice

Juices from sprouts, greens and vegetables are mild cleansers. The juice from fresh fruit are considered to be strong cleansers. They are full of Vitamin C, pure liquid and the acids that give them their tartness have the ability to get rid of waste and harmful bacteria in the tissues of our bodies.

The three acids found in fruits are citric acid, tartaric acid and malic acid. Citric acid is found most abundantly in lemon juice, followed by lime juice, grapefruit, orange, cranberry, strawberry, raspberry, pineapple, peach and tomato.

As with most things, having too much citric acid is not a good thing. Your blood can become too acidic due to high sugar, fat or protein intake. When this happens, your body borrows the alkaline minerals: calcium and magnesium from your skeletal system and teeth. If the condition persist, the bones become weak and they can break if you fall. Your diet needs to contain fresh, whole foods to fight weakening bones.

So, how much citric acid is enough? The right amount is determined by your age and physical activity. Activity helps to metabolize citric acid. Younger people metabolize citric acid better and easier than older people. If you are older and are not active, you may want to limit your citric acid (citrus fruits & juices) to 3 or 4 six ounce servings a week.

When Should You Drink Fresh Juice?

Most people drink beverages while they are eating their meals. BUT, this happens to be the worst time to so. Why? There are actually two reasons.

1) During the process of digestion, your food is broken down to the most useful elements to be used as fuel. Nature has given us saliva that is chemically balanced and digestive juices to help with this important process. If you add additional liquids to this process, you are actually diluting and weakening our body’s own digestive juices and in turn, it’s digestive process.

2) Fresh juices contain highly concentrated sugars and starches. These can ferment in the digestive tract while waiting for the food eaten with them to be digested. This could give you digestive upsets.

For the two reasons mentioned, it is best to drink fresh juices on an empty stomach or one half hour before meals or one half hour after meals. You can also drink your fresh juice as a snack between meals.
